Stop chasing originality and start trusting your own perspective.
One of the questions I’m asked most often is, ‘How do I find my writing voice?’
Usually what people are really asking is, ‘How do I write something original?’
It’s an understandable question.
We’re surrounded by brilliant books, beautiful sentences and writers whose work we admire. It can feel as though everything worth saying has already been said, and said better than we ever could.

So we try harder.
We search for a style. We overthink every sentence. We worry that we sound too much like someone else.
Ironically, that’s often the very thing that keeps our own voice hidden.
Your writing voice isn’t something you invent.
It’s something you uncover.
It grows from the way you see the world. From your experiences, your values, your curiosities and the questions that keep pulling you back to the page. No one else has lived your life or notices exactly what you notice.
That’s where your voice begins.
And here’s something that often surprises people.
Most writers don’t begin by sounding completely original. They begin by reading widely, experimenting, borrowing techniques they admire and writing consistently enough that, over time, something unmistakably theirs starts to emerge.
Your voice isn’t waiting to appear one morning fully formed.
It’s being shaped every time you write.
If you’ve ever worried that your writing sounds too ordinary, too influenced by other authors or simply not ‘you’ enough, this month’s Mindset Insight on Substack explores how to stop chasing originality and begin trusting your own perspective.
Inside the full article you’ll discover:

The writers we recognise instantly didn’t become memorable because they tried to sound different.
