I began my career path to becoming a coach* nearly two years ago after leaving nine years working in secondary education. I wanted a change and knew I didn’t want to return to the education system.
A former colleague suggested a mid-career program through the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, which included three sessions with a career coach. In my first session with the career coach, we explored various career paths and training opportunities. Near the end of our conversation, I confessed my long-standing interest in coaching. Fifteen years ago, I met an executive coach at a writing workshop. Her ability to help people gain clarity on their goals inspired me. When I finally spoke those words to the career coach, it felt like I was stepping into a role I had been preparing for my entire life.
My career path to becoming a coach had actually begun a long time ago.
My career has been long and diverse, but each experience has equipped me with valuable tools for coaching. I’ve been fortunate to have informal mentors and have always maintained a learning mindset, which has served me well. In my studies as a coach, I have discovered that many of the important aspects of this role are part of my DNA and that I have been effectively in training as a coach for my whole career.

10 lessons I learned on my career path to becoming a coach
1. Embrace change
Throughout my career, I’ve learned adaptability is key. The ability to embrace change and be open to evolving methods has been essential for both personal and professional growth. Adapting to new techniques and approaches keeps my coaching relevant and effective.
2. Value empathy
Empathy is a cornerstone of successful coaching. Understanding and relating to clients’ experiences and emotions helps build trust and rapport. This connection enables me to provide more tailored and impactful guidance.
3. Commit to continuous learning
The field of mindset coaching is constantly evolving. Staying updated with the latest research, techniques, and trends is crucial for providing the best support. Continuous learning ensures that my practices remain current and effective.
4. Set boundaries
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is vital for long-term success. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life helps prevent burnout and ensures that I can provide the best support to my clients.
5. Celebrate successes
Recognising and celebrating both my clients’ achievements and my own milestones is important. Celebrating successes fosters motivation and reinforces the positive impact of our work together.
6. Practice patience
Growth and change take time, both for my clients and myself. Practicing patience and understanding the gradual nature of progress helps manage expectations and maintain a positive outlook.
7. Build resilience
Challenges and setbacks are inevitable. Developing resilience and coping strategies has been crucial in overcoming obstacles and continuing to provide effective coaching.
8. Foster a growth mindset
Encouraging a growth mindset in both my clients and myself has been transformative. Emphasising learning, improvement, and adaptability helps overcome challenges and achieve goals.
9. Network and collaborate
Engaging with other professionals and participating in networking opportunities has enriched my practice. Collaborating with others provides new insights, ideas, and perspectives that enhance my coaching approach.
10. Reflect and adapt
Regularly reviewing my coaching practices and adapting based on feedback and results has been essential for growth. Reflection helps identify areas for improvement and ensures that my methods remain effective.
* my coach training is as a life coach which is the same as a mindset coach, and things like career coach, writing coach, book coach, executive coach, creativity coach, art coach etc are all niches within the coaching umbrella.
