Sound familiar?

You have the ideas. You have the intention. Weeks pass, life intervenes, and the manuscript stays where you left it, untouched, weighing on you.

It’s not a talent problem. It’s a structure problem. Writing in isolation, without accountability or community, is hard for everyone: from debut writers to seasoned authors.

Writing Momentum gives you the consistent space and support to stop restarting and start progressing.

“Sometimes you just need a reboot — a challenge to move from feeling blocked to hungering for any moment to write. That’s what Meg’s sessions do — challenge you to refocus your anxious energy into productive writing, even if it is just one word.”

What is Writing Momentum?

Writing Momentum is an online writing group that meets twice a week via Zoom. Led by creativity coach and writer Meg Dunley, each session combines a poetry-based writing prompt, 40 minutes of focused writing time, and a weekly accountability check-in.

1. Weekly writing prompts

Every week, year around, participants receive fresh, thought-provoking questions and prompts. These act as a springboard for your current or new writing projects. Thought-provoking questions to take deep into your work.

2. Accountability

At the end of each session the group check in on the previous week’s writing goals, and commit to what you’ll do in the week ahead. Knowing others will ask makes all the difference.

3. Community

A consistent group of writers who show up week after week via Zoom, a private WhatsApp group, and two face-to-face community gatherings a year. Writing Momentum is a real community of writers and not just another online subscription.

A note on sharing

Writing Momentum is not a critique group. The 40 minutes of writing time is private. Nobody reads your work unless you choose to share in the community outside of the Writing Momentum hour. The prompts are a springboard, not an assignment. Use them directly or let them unlock something in the project you’re already working on.

How do the online writing sessions work?

Sessions run twice a week — Wednesdays 7–8am and Fridays 12:30–1:30pm Melbourne time. Join one or both each week, whatever works for your schedule.

Session structure

  • 0:00–010 minutes — A poem and thought-provoking prompt to set your writing intention
  • 0:10–0:50 minutes — 40 minutes of silent, focused writing time
  • 0:50–1:00 minutes — Writing accountability: what did you do this week, and what’s your commitment for the week ahead?

The Wednesday session is recorded and, along with with the prompt, poem and questions, is sent to members on Friday afternoon. This means that you can write at whatever time works for you.

Some weeks there’s no live session. On these weeks, the Zoom room stays open at the usual time and a prerecorded poem with prompts and questions is sent to all members. This means that members can still gather, write together, and access the recording, ensuring an uninterrupted writing momentum.

“I definitely recommend Writing Momentum to anyone looking to develop a weekly writing practice. The experience helped me foster a daily writing habit. You can use the time during the online session to work on your own writing or follow a prompt given by Meg.”

— Linda

The 2026 theme: The shape of time

Each year Meg curates an overarching theme that weaves through every session’s prompts and poetry. For 2026, the theme is the shape of time — a year of writing into memory, change and return.

Meg draws on poets like Mary Oliver, Judith Wright and Gwen Harwood — writers who pay close attention to the human relationship with the natural world — to find the most resonant prompt for each week’s writing.

Who is this writing group for?

Writing Momentum is not a class, and there are no prerequisites. It’s a space to turn up, write, and be supported — for every kind of writer at every stage.

  • Emerging writers building a sustainable writing practice for the first time
  • Established writers who’ve lost their rhythm and want it back
  • Fiction, memoir, poetry, non-fiction writers — any genre, any form
  • Anyone who writes best with other people nearby
  • Writers who want accountability without judgment

Members come from across Australia and internationally. All members are sent the recording on Fridays, which means that the timezone is rarely a barrier.

“As a new writer I found these workshops very beneficial. The prompts and sharing often helped me in the exploration of my characters and my writing. The sharing of ideas from other writers was really useful. Hugely helpful in keeping me accountable with my writing.”

— Brona

What if I can’t make the live sessions?

The Wednesday session is recorded and sent to all members on Friday afternoon. Members receive the recording, prompt, poem and questions.

What happens on weeks when there’s no live session?

The Zoom room stays open at the usual time. Members can gather and write together using the recording, so the routine, which means the community, and your writing momentum, stays intact.
